John Wesley Powell 1834-1902

John Wesley Powell passed away on September 23, 1902. Powell’s health had been failing for a period of time before he died at 68. Powell’s wife Emma Dean and only daughter Mary Dean were by his side at his summer home in Haven, Main. Before he passed away, John Wesley Powell willed his brain to science, and his preserved brain is now a part of the collection of the National Museum of Natural History. With honors bestowed to a Civil War veteran, John Wesley Powell was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with the words “Soldier. Explorer. Scientist” engraved on his headstone.
