How to Load a Car onto a Tow Dolly [VIDEO]

May 5, 2015

If you need to move your front-wheel-drive vehicle without actually driving it, you should consider using a U-Haul tow dolly. A tow dolly will allow you to easily load and tow a vehicle behind another vehicle or moving truck. This is a great option for people making cross-country moves or for transporting project cars.

The following video will demonstrate step-by-step how to use a tow dolly to transport a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

Tow DollyWhen planning your move, be sure to verify your towing combination can do the job. You can verify the towing capacity online prior to completing the reservation process. The online verification will require the year, make and model of both the car you are towing as well as the car you want to tow with. The only other information you need to know is your towing vehicle’s hitch capacity.

Front-wheel-drive Vehicles

A tow dolly only raises the front tires off the ground, not all four. This type of towing device is best suited to tow a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Some older rear-wheel-drive vehicles, which can easily have the drive shaft removed, may also be candidates for using a tow dolly.

If you don’t know whether your car is front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, refer to your car owner’s manual or consult a trusted mechanic to determine what method of towing is best for your vehicle.
